During the filming of the TV program, “The Sopranos”, various parts of New Jersey were used for film locations. Many people born in New Jersey felt the program focused solely on Northern New Jersey which cast the entire state in the mistaken view of New Jerseyans as clones of New Yorkers. Nothing is further from the truth. The farther south one travels in New Jersey, the more one finds vast differences between New Jerseyans and New Yorkers. The lines blur most south of Union County. In fact, so does the crowding and congestion associated with this most populus state, per square mile as populated as Hong Kong. New Jersey – A Most Historic State New Jersey was originally home to Leni Lenape Indians who settled along the banks of rivers throughout the state. Most New Jersey museums display numerous artifacts of the Leni Lenape. New Jersey is actually named for the Earl of Jersey who under King George explored the vast forested areas of this undeveloped colony. Throughout areas of New Jersey, from east to west, there are reminders of the Revolutionary War. The most active Revolutionary War group, the Sons of the American Revolution are located throughout New Jersey where they re-enact the Revolutionary War to thongs of people and provide the most comprehensive information on the subject of the Revolutionary War. As would be found in the New Jersey Archives at the Monmouth County Archival Library, New Jersey counties names reflect the origins of the first English explorers: Middlesex, Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth are a few old English names of early settlers who made their way to the inviting shores of the colony. Throughout its state history, New Jersey experienced waves of settlers, Germans, Scottish, Irish, Italians, Polish and French who left their mark on the state. The famous poet, Walt Whitman, resided in the town of Camden. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light bulb, is another famous New Jerseyan. Going “Down The Shore” In the late 1850’s, people traveled from areas north of New Jersey to bask in the summer sunshine at the New Jersey shore. Cape May retains its vintage Victorian flavor; whereas, Atlantic City, Long Branch, Asbury Park, Brigantine and other shore towns evolve from one generation to the next. Still crowds keep coming for the famous salt water taffy, waffle ice cream sandwiches, amusement parks, deep sea fishing boats and the sand and surf New Jersey is most famous for. There are many beaches along the Eastern seaboard. Yet, people hop on a bus or train or drive hours down the New Jersey Turpike just to go “Down The Shore”. In winter New Jerseyans spend their time in historic inns like Forsgate Country Club, a former barracks of George Washington where a Revolutionary War fireplace burns brightly beneath a two-hundred year old war mural. In Stockton, New Brunswick and all over western New Jersey, arts are featured. In Princeton, President Woodrow Wilson was once a member of the ultra-exclusive, all male “Nassau Club” and Albert Einstein developed his theory of relativity, tucked into the gracious, sprawling campus of Princeton University.
