odds of Two People being dealt pocket aces, 6 handed Table?
Ok, tonight i was in a texas hold em poker tournament at a 6 handed table. Two people got pocket aces at the same time. What are the odds of that happening? I know being dealt pocket aces is 1/221 but what about the aforementioned scenario?
Short answer: 1 out of every 18,048 and 1/3 deals. (18,048.3333333)
Long answer:
Take it down to the most extreme. Imagine heads up play and both people get pocket aces! What are those odds?
You’d have to figure out 4/52 X 3/51 X 2/50 X 1/49 which equals 1 out of every 270,725 deals. (Similar logic as 4/52 X 3/51 equaling 1 out of 221.)
Now, just figure out how many 2-person combinations there are with a table of 6 people. ANY two of those people might have the pocket aces in your scenario. It could be player 1 (P1) and player 2 (P2); OR it could be P1&P3; P1&P4; P1&P5; P1&P6; P2&P3; P2&P4; P2&P5; P2&P6; P3&P4; P3&P5; P3&P6; P4&P5; P4&P6; OR P5&P6.
That’s 15 combinations of 2 players that could potentially have the pocket aces.
So divide your 1 in 270,725 deals by 15 and you get 1 out of every 18,048 and 1/3 deals (18,048.33333) that 2 players on a 6-handed table will get pocket aces.

Just for fun:
Let’s take a hypothetical extreme – imagine a 26-handed game where the entire deck is dealt out. (Forget the fact that we can’t actually play out the hand because there are no cards left.) What are the odds of 2 players being dealt pocket aces now? With 26 players, there are 325 2-player combinations, so now we take 270,725 and divide it by 325 to find out that once every 833 deals 2 people would get pocket aces. Still hard to do!!!
