How to brush a pool table?

Hello! I have just become a pool table owner a few weeks ago and got it re-felted (it’s been in storage since 1990!) It’s manu. date is 1985, hence the re-felting and I was just wondering (since I forget) what is the proper way to brush it to keep it nice and smooth.
It’s felt, not cloth :)

you start at where the cue ball goes and work you’re way down, that is the proper way of doing it. i used to play competition 8 ball.
