How do you measure a stick shaft to get the length you need.?
I have always had one piece wooden sticks so I’d use the old standing the stick up vertically in front of me trick, and if it reached my forehead it was the length I wanted. How would I go about doing that with just a shaft because it doesn’t have the blade in it so my good old trick won’t work.
The best way to measure your shaft length (wow, that sounded a little sexual, sorry) is with the blade in. Some blades have a different length hosel, so you can’t always go with a “rule of thumb” idea.
Install the blade, and put your skates on. Hold the stick vertically in front of you, and the top end of the stick should be somewhere between your chin, and your nose.
Of course, that is the typical guideline. Personal preference will dictate a bit of fluctuation in length to suite your style/position.
Typically, a forward that likes to mix it up in close quarters will perhaps opt for a bit of a shorter stick for extra maneuverability. While a defenseman may want a bit of a longer stick for better reach on an opponent, or a heavier shot.
Another thing you may want to look for after you use your stick for a while, is where is the blade wearing? Too much wear on the front portion of the stick might suggest you have cut the stick too short, and may need to add a plug to make it a bit longer. Conversely, if the blade is wearing too much towards the heel, it may be too long, and need a bit more trimming.
