Are all cue shafts made of hard rock maple? If not, are some woods less warpable than others?

I play on a billiards team and was an idiot and left my much beloved stick in my hot car.

Almost all pool cues have maple shafts. Snooker cues and some others made in Europe are often made of Ash. Some cues are made of synthetic materials such as fiberglass or titanium, and are generally poor quality and I recommend against them.

All wood has the potential to warp, but the difference between cues that often warp and those that hardly ever do is the treatment of the wood and how the shaft is made. The highest quality cues use shaft wood that has a very high ring count (in other woods, comes from trees that are extremely old) and no blemishes, is hung to dry for many months or even years, and then is turned down very slowly (in other words, they turn it down a little bit on the lathe, then set it to rest, then turn it down a little bit more days or even weeks later until it is the right size). A guy I know who makes cues charges over $400 just for his shafts because of all the time and effort he puts into finding the very best wood and the painstaking lengths he goes to to make sure they are perfect.

You don’t have to spend a ton of money get a shaft that probably won’t warp, but you should buy a quality brand cue. McDermott and Viking both warranty against warpage, and I’m sure some other brands do too.

And oh yeah, don’t leave it in your car. Abuse of a cue is a lot money likely to cause it to warp than manufacturing defects.
