Will painting a small room with light-stained pine floors bright yellow make it feel small or large?
I know dark colors make a room small and white=large. What about bright yellow? Ralph Lauren’s Kayak Yellow from the Island Brights swatches is the shade I think I’d use. White trim.
Since yellow is the color of sunshine, it will brighten your room, that’s for sure. Will it make it look and feel bigger? Well, that depends on a number of things – how cluttered the room is, how many colors come together in all the decor accents, etc. Also, since there is a psychology behind color, it’s important to know that if your room is facing South and gets lots of sun, then you may find you feel hot and stifled in the room, because yellow is a warm color and gives you the impression of warmth. In a room facing South, you’ll want to opt for a cooler color to keep in just right. If, however, the room is facing North, then by all means, paint it yellow to brighten it up as well as warm it up.
All that being said, yellow can be quite refreshing, even if it is a warm color. You only have to pair it with crisp, clean colors to cool it down – iced whites, fresh cucumber pale green, a hint of black here and there and a very high gloss white trim.
Also, keep in mind that color affects our mood. Yellow has a tendancy to represent joy, happiness, optimism, idealism, imagination, hope, sunshine, summer, gold, philosophy, spirtuality and inspiration. In Asia, yellow is sacred and imperial.
So, if you want yellow, there’s definitely a way to make the room bright and airy with your color choice (which is very nice, by the way).
