Is it bad for a laser sight to extend past the end of the barrel of a handgun?

I purchased a laser sight for my XD, and it extends past the end of the barrel. Is that bad?

The hot gases coming out the muzzle will eventually destroy the laser unless it has some sort of protective metal shield between it and the muzzle.
