Should I custom make my urban jump bike or buy one?
What are some good websites to go to for bike parts?
Shop around carefully to see if you can find a complete bike at a price that’s agreeable to you *and* has most (or all) of the components that you want. That hardly ever happens, but it will be much, much cheaper to do it that way and upgrade a couple of small things if you want to. Building up a bike from the frame is fun, but totally more expensive even if you shop smart and find great deals. This is assuming you can build it up yourself and choose parts properly.
http://www.jensonusa.com , http://blueskycycling.com , http://www.pricepoint.com , http://www.greenfishsports.com , and http://www.wheelworld.com are the places that I use the most, in that order. You can also find good deals and selection at http://www.ride-this.com and http://wwwcambriabike.com
If you don’t mind ordering from overseas, http://www.chainreactioncycles.com has tons of parts and great deals. The shipping is actually very reasonable (free to the US on $250 orders, too!). I’ve used them a number of times and always look to them in my searches for stuff.
Hope this helps some….if you need more help later on just post up again. Be sure to give your local shop a chance to quote you prices on things, too….they usually can’t compete with (or even get) some of the closeouts and OE specials that you can find online, but sometimes they can and it’s definitely worth supporting your local shop and forming a good relationship with them.
