How much power is in a gram of commercial grade uranium?
I’m doing a project for my physics class to find out how much uranium is needed to power my city for 6 months. I have found out all the other needed information but I can’t seem to find how much energy commercial grade uranium produces.
Assuming a typical nuclear power plant produces 1000 MW/hour of electricity, this requires about 3000 MW/hour of heat. Doing a direct mass to energy conversion with e=mc^2, that amount of energy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year is about 350 grams of mass.
Now, when a particular U-235 atom fissions, only some of the mass is converted to energy. Most of the mass ends up as daughter products, which are lighter elements. So, way more than 350 grams of U-235 needs to fission to get that much power.
