Is “Sweet Lou” starting to feel the heat? Is the front office finally going to jump on his case?
The Cubbies are really starting to stink the place up. Lost again today!
Fozzy: I get the message but you know as well as I do that nobody fires the “front office”. It’s not if but when will Lou pay the price for all the mismanagement?
Which front office should be jumping on Piniella’s case?
The front office that traded away DeRosa, who is on a 30 home run, 120 RBI, 110 RS, pace in Cleveland? Or maybe you mean the front office who put all their eggs in one basket by using up the salary room that created on a player with a history of injuries, meltdowns, and overall selfishness who is hitting all of .225? Or perhaps you mean the front office who has basically filled their farm system with a bunch of good hitters who can’t play the field (Hoffpauir, Fox). Or maybe even the front office that decided that Aaron Miles was somehow going to help. Or maybe you mean the front office who couldn’t pull the trigger on the Peavy deal this winter. (Not that pitching is the problem, but just another sign of the ineptitude)
Piniella can only run out the players he’s been given.
Probably the only thing that Lou should be doing any differently is sitting down some of the overpriced talent. Let Soriano have a couple of days off (I don’t even care who plays out on left – Hoffpauir or Fox, maybe even Johnson), let Bradley take a little rest, and give Soto a few days to get his head back in the game as well. It’s time to send a message to some of these players who seem to be thinking of anything but baseball. (Pretty sad that the Cubs defense was actually improved today when Fox replaced Soriano in left.)
And it probably wouldn’t hurt for him to kick a few players in the backside as well, and show a bit of the old fire.
Edit – I agree, sometimes the manager ends up taking th efall for the mistakes of the front office. But I don’t think Lou will end up getting fired. I really think that they are going to keep him through next season (I think there is an option for next year in his contract – not sure if it is Lou’s, the Cubs’, or a mutual option), and then introduce their new manager beginning in 2011 as Ryne Sandberg, They’ve been grooming him in the minors the last few seasons, and I can really see them perhaps moving him up to Iowa next season, and then to the big club once Piniella does retire.
But you never know. Especially when it comes to my Cubs. (40 plus years of being a fan has taught me nothing more important than “you can never be sure of anything”.)
