How can I make the joints on my Popsicle stick bridge stronger?

I have to make Popsicle stick bridges for school. I heard that making the joints stronger really helps. How do I do that with a Popsicle stick bridge without just using more glue?

The pinned joint mentioned above is good, but the truth is, a good-quality wood glue is stronger than soft pine wood itself – in other words, the wood fibers will rip apart before the glue will separate.

To make a good joint, do the bridge in 2-dimensional sections. Plan out and lay the lower pieces of a truss section out on foam board, straight pins help keep things aligned. Test fit the next layer, then glue. The secret is to weight down the upper pieces (with something like books) overnight so that the glue layer is as thin as possible. Do not disturb for 12 hours, joints will be so strong that the sticks will break before the glue will separate. Of cpourse, you want to design it so that all your lap joints are nice and flat – don’t have sticks that attach any other way other than perfectly flat. And be patient. Once weighted down, do not disturb until completely dry.

Also, don’t use any sticks that have any warp in them. They should be perfectly flat.
